How to choose the perfect person for your recommendation!

Should it be your favourite literature teacher in college? Or maybe the strict but respectful maths professor? What about the witty and graceful dance teacher who taught you your best numbers? We know how tough it is to pick and approach the right recommender for your university application while applying overseas for your education. It is not easy if you have a lot of options, and tougher if you don’t. Recommendations show you as a person through the lens of those who have mentored you in some capacity. It is a fair lens and can work wonders for your application. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind while making your choice!

  • Their occupation/profession

It matters. More than you know! But the designation does not hurt your chances. So do not pick someone who is high placed in an organisation but does not know you well enough or is incapable of writing a good recommendation. Who knows, your gym teacher might paint a better picture of you than your school principal!

In case of professionals, getting a LOR from your senior holds greater value than that written by your peer because a peer may simply adorn it with your praises for the sake of goodwill and friendship, which can sound artificial.

Carrying forward that line of thought-

  • How well do they know you?

Unless someone is aware of all your accomplishments, dreams and aspirations, the chances of them being a good recommender are close to nil. They will add value when they can describe in detail both your academic and extra-curricular interests and paint a fair picture. Showcasing a holistic personality is no mean task so choose someone who probably has seen you grow over years or knows you well on a personal level. Plus, your success should be viewed as a personal success by them! If they are a well-wisher, they are more likely to write a great recommendation.

  • Early bird gets the worm!

It is never too early to start planning! If you are clear on your application, it wouldn’t hurt to star building a good rapport with your professors or course teachers that will eventually convince them to draft a compelling recommendation for you. Talk to them ahead of time about these and ensure that you are involved in class activities to leave a mark. Choose a recommender with whom you have maintained a positive relationship.

  • How well do they understand you?

If you are your chosen recommender are not on the same page about your chosen university or course, it might bring a rough patch in the process. It is better to pick someone who agrees with you and will support you regardless of the choices you make. Find someone with a strong persuasive tone and not a forced, artificial tone with a weak base.
