How To Make Your Dorm Room a Home Away From Home

  • Pictures, Pictures and Pictures

Living in a dorm can be overwhelming. You are bound to get homesick, so much so, that you end up missing your 4th grade best friend who you haven’t talked to since middle school. So, surrounding yourself with lots of pictures help you relive all the blasts from the past. Familiar pictures create a warm environment and help you deal with homesickness.

  • Pile on Pillows

Come midterms, come finals, your true best friend throughout your college years will be your bed. Add throw pillows to make your bed colorful and comfy. Layer pillows of different colors, sizes, shapes and softness to make your bed you’re a warm haven.

  • Invest in a little Mood Lighting

After spending time, effort and money on personalizing your room, those harsh florescent lights just ruin the mood of the room. Soft mood lights give a cozy vibe and help you feel homey. You can clip your polaroids on a string of fairy lights or frame the ceiling with twinkling lights to lighten the mood of your room.

  • Decorate them Drab Walls

Dorm walls are usually pale and uninviting. So, use up the wall space to make it appeasing by putting up your favorite art pieces, posters, pictures of family and friends. Inspirational quotes, abstract tapestry and artistic mirrors are great ways to fill those dull walls and give the room your personal touch.

  • Light your memories

Sometimes, you’ll miss your favorite taco from the nearby food truck back home and sometimes you’ll simply miss how your clothes, your room and your house smelled. So, allow your olfactory senses to trick you and light that candle that you stole from your parent’s room.

  • Don’t forget the Special Corner for your Souvenir.

When move to live in a different room, different city, hell, a different country, it’s comforting to have sentimental items around you that remind you of home. So, don’t forget to pack and surround yourself with meaningful items like your favorite mug, your sister’s night robe or Mr. Bunny who’s been sleeping with you since you were a baby.
